industrial disease claims in Scotland – Asbestos Exposure Levels

Asbestosis has always been seen as a disease resulting from heavy doses of exposure to asbestos. The initial cases were reported amongst workers who spent most of their working hours exposed to excessive amounts of asbestos dust. They continued in these conditions for several years before they came down with the disease.

The Asbestos Industry Regulations of 1931 put in place some dust control measures to make asbestos factories safer for people to work in, but this yielded little results as cases of asbestosis still persisted. Then it was discovered that even a little exposure for long periods of time could still cause the disease.

It also became clear that protecting the worker from further exposure did not actually prevent the disease from occurring, and if it was already present, from getting worse.

The result of studies on cases of asbestosis have basically concentrated on workers in asbestos factories or on thermal insulation engineers. These workers have certainly been exposed to dangerous amounts of asbestos for very long periods of time.

The effects long term and intermittent exposure to light has on workers in other occupation have not been extensively studied and understood.

However, research findings published between the 1960’s and mid 1980’s has led to the conclusion that a five-fold reduction in the level of total exposure to hazardous substances is acceptable. This would reduce the risk of asbestosis being contracted by workers.

Experts generally are of the opinion that a worker can only contract asbestosis if they are constantly in contact with large amounts of asbestos for long periods of time, while other asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma, diffuse pleural thickening and pleural plaques require much less exposure.
